The critical care team at PetCare is made up of doctors and nurses dedicated to providing advanced treatment and monitoring for critically ill patients with problems ranging from acute life threatening illness to those with complex multi-organ involvement.

Our critical care doctors have completed advanced residency training in this field and our ICU has state of the art monitoring and diagnostic equipment. The critical care team often works closely with PetCare’s surgical, medical or emergency services and with referring veterinarians.

The ICU is staffed by doctors and nurses 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Upon admission to the ICU, our critical care doctors can provide the following services tailored to each individual patient:

  • 24 hour consultation
  • Intensive fluid therapy management: electrolyte abnormalities, constant rate infusions
  • Transfusion therapy: typing, cross-matching, blood products
  • Central venous and arterial catheterization
  • Nutritional management: enteral and parenteral
  • Oxygen therapy: blood gas monitoring, supplemental oxygen, ventilation
  • Advanced continuous monitoring: ECG, invasive and non-invasive pressure monitoring, capnography, pulse oximetry
  • Pain management

The ICU environment can be very unfamiliar and overwhelming for families. Therefore we encourage visits and an ICU nurse is always available for phone calls to update you on how your pet is doing. Our goal is to not only give your pet the best care possible, but to help your family understand your pet’s condition and provide informative, caring support.

If your family veterinarian feels your pet could benefit from intensive care, we welcome a transfer phone call to facilitate the best continuity of care for your pet. In addition, once your pet is able to go home, we will work with your veterinarian to ensure the best follow up care.
